STANDARD SIX: External Development Leadership
A school executive will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but in fact build community, the leader proactively creates with staff opportunities for parents, community and business representatives to participate as "stockholders" in the school such that continued investments of resources and good will are not left to chance.

A. Parent and Community Involvement and Outreach
- Ligon Middle School has established the first Junior Food Ark, a student-led club that supports reducing hunger and fighting food insecurity. In partnership with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, students will collaborate to cultivate advocacy skills and develop a more comprehensive approach to help families who face food insecurity. The Ligon Food Ark Jr. Pantry serves Ligon students, their families, and members of the community. The Ligon PTA wants to help all students succeed in school by making sure they have enough food at home, whether the support is short-term or long-term. The Food Ark partners with Interfaith Food Shuttle (IFFS) as well as multiple grocery stores to provide fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, cereals, canned goods, and more. The PTA also worked to create recipes that aligned with the items provided to families. Around school breaks and holidays, the Food Ark provides holiday meals include hams/turkeys, as well as desserts and pans to prepare the meal.
B. Federal, State and District Mandates
- In preparation for the Principal Residency, residents complete a course entitled "Law for School Administrators". During this class we read, discussed, and analyzed cases related to school law. Many of the rulings from these cases effect and influence administration and decision making today in schools. This class showed how important it is for administrators to know and understand these laws. These decisions effect how administrators respond to teachers, parents and students, as well as giving guidelines on how to deal with situations that may happen.
